Hi People,

I feel happy to tell you all that let’s go is growing each day with membership request pouring in. I can no longer keep track of each member, the membership is no longer restricted to delhi based travellers, and i no longer wait for the proposed members to first give all information and then allow the membership.. . so many of your membership have been allowed even though i didn’t get a reply to the automated file ‘before membership’.

Another reason behind this leniency, is that, I understand female members wanting to join the group wouldn’t be very comfortable giving out their phone numbers and real name etc. they would probably first want to join the group and then see if they can trust the other members of not.

Bole to mudde ki baat ye hai (the point is that) membership to Let’s Go has now become more easy and it is more of an open group now.

Members are more free to exchange ideas amogst themselves, they are particulary requested to take more initiative in arranging group events, outings etc. The bangalore chapter sure would be seeing a lot of activities this year.

For Delhi Chapter I personally request Santa and Paddy (they have formal names also, Santosh and Pradeep…eek they are so boring in formals) to take charge. Paddy ji kuch ghode shode dauraiye to sahi… santa ji kuch chidia shidia uraaiye to sahi…. 🙂

The most important point that all the members need to remember is that you all are moderators here so just be yourself and don’t bother to wait for any kinds of permission.. . bole to bindaas bol 😀

Kakan be with us always

In Meets, Moderator Speak on September 16, 2006 at 6:55 am

Dear All,

The time is here to break the prolonged silence…a silence which must have been percieved in so many various ways by each one of you here…

It was a momentary break that we took… which I thought would soon be over by a brand new travelling plan…but destiny had a cruel laugh…a few of us were taken through such roads that we were left perplexed, shocked, scared and bewildered as to what to do… I, for one, preferred to remain silent for I didn’t know how long… but now its time to speak.

Recall the last Let’s Go trip that was discussed here…the trekking trip to Chandrasheela Tungnath…. on 11th August 06 4 members Snigdha, Amit Gupta 1 and 2 and Kakan left for the trek…on 16th August 06 only 3 of them returned having lost Kakan.

Somewhere near Rudra Prayag is Siyalsaur… there flows river Mandakini… on 14th August 2006 Kakan went swimming in the river… 3 other were sitting by the river bank. Suddenly they saw her being pulled in the middle of the river and then within few seconds she disappeared into the water… She was lost in the river, frantic search went on for 10 days…….. finally her body minus the soul was found near haridwar on 24th August where she was cremated.

I am yet to recover the loss of a dear friend and a member… still wonder if she would have ever made it to one such trip on her own…still wonder if it was me or destiny who introduced her to this group….the people with who she made the trip…still wonder if Lets Go is too risky a platform….

some said, “put a full stop to lets go, i decided to put a comma.” Let’s erase the comma now and say hello to roads again…

Kakan had joined us on May 25th this year. I knew her since 2003, we were coleagues at one time. She was just back from London (this March), where she was working, and was on a sabbatical she wanted to meet some exiting people, travel and live life to the fullest thus joined Let’s Go.

Those of you who have been following the mailing list must have read her messages on and off…. at a time when most of us were behaving quite immaturely on a flame war she posted one of the most sensible messages and gave positivity to the group. When this group was almost about to fall out she helped putting things back at the right place. She called me one of those evenings to tell me how to avoid these flame wars…She specialised in Child and adoloscent psychology.. .and had a knack of understanding human psychology on the whole.

I still can hear her voice, see her face, the last time we met at Amit’s place when I had the best party…

Its unfortunate that most of Lets go members couldn’t meet her…but those who have would know she was a real gem, she was like heaven’s fallen star, like an angel paying a short visit to us mortals… her charm and liveliness were unusual.

She had high views about Let’s Go. She was of the view that the group emails should be made viewable by non members since they can be a good resource pool for backpackers. About the flame war she advised me to do an editing of the message archive twice a month keeping only the resource ful mails and deleting the general chit chat ones….told me it’s ok if some people don’t respond to the group emails…”you should realise there are people who join the group to know more about backpacking and then make their own plans.”

Kakan was extremely ambitious, both in work and in personal life… She would have been the last person to see this group becoming silent and phasing away into oblivion…. ..

So we are back… I would be posting details of a fresh Let’s Go Meet tentatively on 16th of September… Let’s hear from all regarding your availibility. ..More to follow…

My tribute to Kakan.. http://sanjukta.wordpress.com/2006/08/24/119/

Let us all pray for her,
God Bless you Kakan, you’d be always be with us in our hearts.
May God give us all the strength to survive the loss…

Moderator Thanks

I started the Lets Go group purely for selfish reasons. I wanted to travel around but never had a proper company so I thought how about having a group of similarly placed travel freaks…Group was formed but the travel didn’t happen untill last week, 4 months since it started, may be because the first few members who I thought were similarly placed weren’t really similarly placed. By December I personally kind of stopped writing to the group due to lack of active participation. I didn’t know what to do with the group. And then this new kids joined the group and everything changed. Thanks to all those new bees for putting back life in this group with their overwhelming enthusiasm for the Jim Corbett trip. You people planned and executed an excellent trip in which I just had fun. Here goes my personal thanks to all….

Thanks to Vibhor and his Uncle’s family in Ramnagar. A warm traditional welcome proving every letter of the phrase “atithi devo bhava” true was waiting for us at the home of Vibhor’s Uncle, who picked us up early in the morning from RamNagar Station. We went their home, got freshen up had a grand traditional breakfast. Uncle and his family extended their warmth till the time we boarded the train back to Delhi.

It’s unbelievable how a bunch of guys (us) who were just virtual IDs couple of weeks back were getting along so well as if we were friends for ages. It was unbelievable the amount of love and care a family can show to a group of complete stranger us. And then they say Internet isn’t really the place to meet people.

Thanks to Amit for joining the group and also getting Vibhor on board.

Thanks Monica for joining, the trip wouldn’t have been the same in your absence and thanks for getting Ramit on board.

Thanks to Abhishek for all the efforts he had put in arranging the trip and getting Monica back on the trip.

Thanks to Ramit for bringing glamour to the trip with his laptop and his high funda photo download upload and ‘all that Jazz’…

Thanks Yogesh for just being who you are, for sticking around the group throughout its dormancy

Finally thanks to Snigdha, for taking the initiative of arranging the trip…we had so much fun sharing our secret school time jokes

You all gave me a trip I was waiting for so so very long…

Moderator speak

The first backpacking has taken its toll on couple of members of the group and some good friends. Like all event planning this one too met with ego clashes, unnecessary assumptions, over drawn conclusions, personal differences, flaming messages, pissed off moods frustrated outburts etc. The result, Monica, Sundeep, Kreeti and Asheeth left the group.

As announced we had the Final Jim Corbett Ice Breaker Meet where 6 of the original 10 participants including Monica met up. We managed to sort out our differences. Best part is Monica has joined the group back and is now ready looking forward to the trip. I realize the root cause of all clashes was the fact that to most of us here, company is more important than the journey, which is not totally wrong…sometimes a good company can make a boring journey memorable…

As a moderator I failed to manage the group, I failed to moderate the flame wars. I learned a few things may be at the cost of hurting Asheeth, here is my sincere apologies to him…As members the guys were too impulsive, impatient they reacted at every small issue, people took decisions at the spur of the moment.

All’s well that ends well… let’s see how the trip ends… Kreeti and Asheeth having dropped out the 8 of us are all set to leave tonight, but as I said on the mailing list, nothing is certain but death. So we never know unless we board the train…

To those who left the group if any day you feel like joining back you are welcome.

Wait for the updates…and pics

The show must go on
